If you're looking for a healthier alternative to traditional cake frosting, this recipe strikes the perfect balance. Made with thick homemade yogurt cheese, it's smooth, creamy, lightly sweetened, and wonderfully tangy. Rich in protein and probiotics, it delivers all the satisfaction of classic frosting without being overwhelmingly sweet.
Think of it as the fresher, lighter cousin of traditional cream cheese frosting. The subtle tang of yogurt pairs beautifully with sweet cakes and breads, making it especially delicious on carrot cake, banana bread, gingerbread, cupcakes or muffins.

The secret to achieving a thick, creamy frosting is starting with well-strained yogurt cheese. Plan ahead and strain your homemade yogurt for 12-24 hours before making the frosting. The longer the yogurt drains, the thicker and creamier it becomes. Find out how here.
Although this frosting is naturally softer than buttercream or traditional store-bought cream cheese frosting, properly strained yogurt produces a frosting that spreads beautifully and can be piped onto cupcakes. Once chilled, it holds its shape well and won't melt or slide off your baked treats at room temperature.
Because this recipe contains only a handful of ingredients, using a good-quality pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste makes a noticeable difference. If you'd like a more traditional frosting flavour, simply add an extra ½ teaspoon of vanilla. It helps mellow the natural tang of the yogurt and creates a sweeter, more familiar flavour. You can also increase the sweetener to suit your taste.
SWEETENER
Frosting doesn't have to be a sugar bomb. One of the advantages of homemade yogurt frosting is that you can sweeten it as little or as much as you like. Use our measurements as a starting point and adjust to your preference.
For classic sweetness: sifted icing sugar
For an SCD-friendly frosting: honey
For a naturally sweet caramel flavour: maple syrup
For a sugar-free option: powdered sugar-free sweetener
Liquid sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup create a slightly softer frosting, while powdered sweeteners produce a firmer consistency that's ideal for piping.

This simple frosting is wonderfully versatile. Try one of these flavour combinations:
Chocolate: Add ½ cup cacao powder.
Strawberry: Stir through 10 crushed freeze-dried strawberries.
Orange: Omit the vanilla and add the zest and a little juice from 1 orange.
Orange & Cinnamon: Add 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and the zest of 1 orange.
Gingerbread: Add 1 teaspoon ground ginger with a pinch each of cinnamon and cloves.
Peanut Butter: Fold in ¼-½ cup natural peanut butter.
