It is a common belief that we would get more good bacteria from taking store-bought probiotics.

Fermented food has been a mainstay of the human diet for thousands of years. These days fermenting is not so common - to the detriment of our health. If you’re on the gut health path, you are probably keen to learn how to get more fermented food into your diet. Getting a dose of probiotics from homemade, naturally fermented yogurt is a champion place to start. But, it can’t be any old yogurt - it has to be homemade 24-hour yogurt if you want to get your fill.

Does waiting two days for yogurt to ferment seem unreasonable to you? Are you wondering why you can't just take a probiotic pill? You can, but no pill will match the amount of good bacteria you ingest with a generous dollop of homemade 24 hour yogurt. If you are on a gut healing journey, homemade yogurt should be your first go to healing food. THE FACTS - 24 HOUR YOGURTS Vs A PROBIOTIC

The official website for 'Breaking the vicious cycle - intestinal health through diet' claims that "24 hour SCD yogurt has a concentration of 3 billion cfu/ml which means that in just a cup of Yogurt (236ml) you'll get 708 Billion beneficial bacteria and that's about 50 times more than that claimed for a typical 15 billion capsule" That's a big difference hey? About 30 times the healthy bacteria going into your tummy in one, delicious serve of homemade yogurt. Can't argue with that!  24 hour yoghurt also has a higher probiotic count than commercial yogurt because it is fermented longer. Want to know why that st? Read the post; Making yogurt - fermentation time and temperature make all the difference.

THE PROBIOTIC LOW DOWN

Probiotics are strains of beneficial bacteria that, when taken, support our native, beneficial bacteria. They also help prevent the opportunistic bacteria and bad bacteria from getting out of control. Here is everything you need to know about yogurt starter culture.

BACTERIA IS A LIVING THING

Bacteria can morph quickly and can have a short and volatile life if the conditions are not right. A bowl of homemade yogurt has an abundance of good bacteria set in the same environment they grew in. No shipping, no repackaging, no contamination, just perfectly alive, good bacteria, awaiting ingestion. Contrast that to the bacteria in a capsule that may have become dormant. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen to your expensive probiotics, but who knows how long they have been sitting on a shelf? I'd be especially suspicious of any probiotics that haven't been kept in the fridge.

GOOD BACTERIA AT A BARGAIN PRICE

Finally, consider how much you spend on probiotics. If you're like me, it’s a lot! With homemade 24 hour yogurt, the cost is equal to a carton of milk – plus a little prep time. But stop! Don’t throw those pills and capsules out. It’s not a case of one or the other, it’s the more the merrier! I’m not suggesting 24 hour yoghurt replace your probiotics. A good multi-strain probiotic will contain strains of beneficial bacteria not available in homemade, 24 hour yoghurt. A probiotic can also be used, in addition to, or in stead of a traditional yogurt starter culture. IN ADDITION TO BEING A HEFTY SOURCE OF PROBIOTICS, 24 HOUR YOGURT IS SUPER NUTRITIOUS
